Delius’ opera is based on Gottfried Keller’s poetic realism anchored version of Shakespeare’s tragedy: Venue is not Verona, but a Swiss village, the protagonists are not Romeo and Juliet, but Sali and Vreli. The eternal companion of lovers who can not come together and eventually die together is a mysterious black violinist who embodies both an idea of ??freedom and the fate of the two. With A Village Romeo and JulietThe British composer Frederick Delius, who has been left unnoticed for too long, creates a unity of text and music that combines nuanced, sound-filled sensations with colorful natural panoramas. The score sometimes reminds of Claude Debussy or Richard Strauss. Director Eva-Maria Höckmayr and stage designer Christian Schmidt transfer the work into our present, allowing dream and reality, youth and old age, life and death to merge.
